Three Interpretations of a Chained Trash Can

Chains

One

“Maybe they chained them because of Sandy–you know, to keep them from blowing away. To be honest,  I never noticed them until you asked. Why do you ask?”

Two

“Chained trash cans in a public park. They just seem so poetic. Symbols of society’s attachment—enslavement, even—to the material things of this world. Material things that are really just junk, particularly when juxtaposed against the priceless freedom of an open field.”

“So you think they were intended to be artistic statements?”

“What does intention have to do with anything? They’re there.”

Three

“I can tell you exactly why they’re there. Metal scrappers. And teenagers.”
